Hallmarking

At Silver Wardrobe we only sell quality Sterling Silver Jewellery. In the UK it is illegal to sell or describe any item as Silver unless it is hallmarked (the exemption weight for silver is 7.78g) This means there are three compulsory marks on anything weighing more than 7.78g: A sponsors mark, a fineness mark and an assay office mark.

Over the years, some countries developed systems of hallmarking silver. The purpose of hallmark application is many fold:

  • To indicate the purity of the silver alloy used in the manufacture or hand-crafting of the piece.
  • To identify the silversmith or company that made the piece.
  • To note the date and/or location of the manufacture or tradesman.
